 Community and Faith-Based Organizations

The goal is to provide literacy outreach programs and resources to students and their families and community members through education institutions, businesses, and community-and faith-based organizations. Strategies and support services/tutoring are provided in literacy skills such as math, reading, writing, technology and workforce preparation.

San Bernardino Community College District and the San Bernardino Boys and Girls Club of America have designed a literacy program that has been replicated in two additional clubs and will expand to a third club in the Fall of 2006. Fourteen community and faith-based organizations in all three regions have committed two "Trainer of Trainers" to be trained in literacy support strategies by AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) in order to provide literacy support training sessions for students and families in '06-07.

The San Bernardino County Superintendent of School's Familiy Involvement program has sponsored three annual Parent Symposiums that has trained over 1,700 families over the last three years in support strategies for their children's academic success and the Reading Buddies program has expanded from 11 to 17 schools to develop reading skills in elementary school children. The key elements are:

  • Literacy support programs offered through educational institutions, businesses, community-and faith-based organizations.
  • Tutorial support in literacy and mathematics.
  • Resources for families to support their children with college and career readiness skills.
