East Valley

San Bernardino Community College District--SB1133

San Bernardino Community College District was awarded a Senate Bill 1133 (SB-1133) Career Technical Education grant in 2008 and has since received two additional years of funding. The original intent of the grant is to forge partnerships with the K-12 schools through career awareness, pathway development, professional trainings, and externships. The focus of the grant is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

This past year, several robotics camps were held. Middle school students, teachers, and adult mentors were trained with Lego Mindstorm robots to design and program robots for competition. An East Valley local competition hosted over 150 students and several teams advanced to the regional Lego competition.

A STEM booklet was developed and has been presented to over 1,208 students in the surrounding school districts. Another career exploration activity with a STEM focus was the creation of the Tech Explorer Project. This mobile vehicle is prepared to have students construct a catapult while experiencing the basics of a production and the manufacturing process using basic tools and machines. The Tech explorer will be facilitated at eight (8) middle schools throughout the region beginning January 2010.

This grant has also initiated an Ambassador program in five (5) middle schools. Ambassadors are college students who are trained to explore career related materials using resources such as the internet, books, and magazines with middle school students. The Ambassadors work 20 hours a week at schools under the guidance of counselors at the site.

A Career Technical Education Spring Institute will be held March 10-12, 2010 in Rancho Mirage, CA. Teams from several San Bernardino Community College District’s K-12 feeder districts have been invited to attend this unique conference where the emphasis will be pathway development from middle school to the community college. A Counselor Conclave has been held for the past two years where over 250 counselors from the Inland Empire gather to learn “Other Ways to Win”.

Summer 2009 was a time of externships for eight (8) area teachers. Business and industry allowed these teachers to work 60 hours in a real-life work environment to discover the science, math, technology, and engineering aspects of their industry.

The SB-1133 Career Technical Education grant has provided K-12 districts a valuable connection between San Bernardino Community College District and partner agencies that serve youth as they prepare for the 21st century.
